Date: 9/11/2003 12:10pm Name:   Hurricane (149) Subject: Solution to your problem I’ve read so much outpouring of complaints on previous post as well as hearing them inside the club about Fred such as failure to pay hostess ladies on time, coercing or harassing them to work for him and treating the ladies like crap. If any ladies who are working for Fred, there is a possible solution to this problem. You may write a letter of complaint against Fred to: Department of Fair Employment and Housing Enforcement, 611 West Sixth St, 15 Floor, Los Angeles CA 90017. If you are writing a letter, describe how you found the job and how Fred treats you and the other ladies [like crap] in the club. Please distribute this information to the other ladies who may have similar problems working for Fred. If the department receives a large volume of complaints against Fred, I’m sure they will listen and may do something about it such as setting up an internal investigation of his club and a recommendation for possible lawsuit. I really do care about all the ladies working at Fred’s club and hate hearing how Fred treats all of you like crap. I feel the ladies should deserve better treatment than that!

When I write a critique about his club, I merely expressing my ideas of ways to improve the club and to make it appealing to the customers as well as the women working for him. I've frequent his club every week, and I saw a lot of potential of his business if he takes the time to listen to his customers or read his customer's critique on this bulletin board with an open-mind in order to improve his business. If Fred continues to run the business without making further changes, he will continue losing money every night. Fred once told me that he doesn't like me writing bullsh*t about him or his club in this bulletin board. So, he just ban me from his club. What he doesn't see is my intentions were good. I also have no intentions of discouraging potential customers away from his club. I would have to agree with TenFree that Fred somehow needs to change his ways or else he will lose control of his business. Actually, he is showing some signs of losing control by creating fear and intimidation towards the women working for him and banning people from his club.

I understand that he's concerned about them hanging out in the bathroom too long, doing drugs, etc.; but that goes on in every club. He could go a long way toward solving that problem by doing away with the overly restrictive rules that alienate hostesses and customers alike. If he created a more pleasant environment to work at, he wouldn't have to be constantly hounding the women to come in to work, turnover would be lower and more women would want to work there (meaning there would be more customers also). IMO he should have given Sleepy more of a free rein in running the club. He managed Dreamland before it got wild and later Flamingo and never had any problems with LE, which is one of the things I think Fred is paranoid about, and I'm sure he could have done the same thing at Tropical if only he had been given the lattitude. As a physical facility, Tropical beats the pants off all the other remaining clubs, but it will never realize its potential unless Fred changes his ways. I'm not holding my breath.

If I was a female hostess and never got paid in two weeks or so, then I would demand my paycheck, quit working there and find another job. It makes no sense to stay and work for free or solely on commission for few more weeks. I understand Fred is making a living like everyone else. He is an entrepenuer of a hostess club business, and it's essential that he keeps his business in full operation, 7 days a week by having a specified number of women working at his club. If there are not enough women, of course, this would cause Fred to be nervous. He will lose a lot of money and be force to go out of business, eventually. It seems to me that he's becoming more desperate. For instance, he contacts all the women everyday and reminds them to come to work. He would also develop strategies to convince the women to show up to work. Since Fred is the owner of the club, he does have the right to run his business which includes banning certain people. In fact, he ban me in his club because I'm considered a threat to his business by posting critiques of his club in this bulletin board.

Fred's excuse was "How can I be sure you will come next week if I pay you now." Fred apparently likes to get behind in salary payments to make sure the girls come back. I told Fred to pay her or I would represent her as her attorney. He went back to his office, wrote her a check, threw me out and fired the hostess. She now works at CF.

On the third day, after being man handled by one of the guys... he was grabbing my arms and ass hard just to hear me say "stop that, you're hurting me" and "no" so he could laugh at me. And after suggesting prostitutiong to me, I quit the job and tried to leave the club. The owner, Fred would not let me leave. They blocked the exit and threatened to lock the door. Once they realized I was going to make a scene, they let me leave. This was a rather terrifying experience... As far as the whole paycheck thing... that is true... he wouldnt pay me for my time there... insisting i had to first make him more money. This club is bunk... if anyone wants to sue this guy.... I'll testify. Candy

Date: 3/26/2003 6:18pm Name:   ex-hostess (1) Subject: Warning to girls looking for work: Fred the owner will treat you like sh!t Let me just say that I know first hand how Fred treats the girls because I worked here for more than 2 months. I have no idea why I stayed for so long and put up with so much crap. I agree w/ Delta and his comment to Hurricane. I enjoy reading your posts Hurricane. let me start off by telling any girls looking for work that if you come upon this site read my post, and if you see an ad in the LA times under gals, with the phone # 1(213)744-0477 don't call it, because Fred the owner will treat you like sh!t. He calls the girls everyday asking what time are you coming in? If you are unable to come in that certain day prepare to get yelled at and argue w/ Fred for a good half hour on the phone, which will then ruin the rest of your day because your so pissed off. Too Fred any reason for not being able to come in to him isn't good enough. It came to a point where he didn't care that I didn't have enough time for my studys, and argued w/ me to come into work or be taken off payroll. Fred's payroll? what a joke. I worked one week 6 days clocked in all hours, and received peanuts for a paycheck. When I confronted him w/ why he's giving me less than (1) Hundred for a paycheck, he said you make money w/ your tips. And not everyday is good, there's good ones and bad ones. Although he told me in the begining that I will be paid hourly, what a lie. Fred lies to get girls to stay and make them believe that there checks will get bigger. He even takes the girls personal cell phones away when they first get to work. If you notice girls are only allowed in the bathroom and dressing room one at a time, Fred says that it's for safety reasons, yah right what are the girls going to do that's so dangerous ,share each others lipstick, brush, or is he worried about them talking about him, and the way he doesn't know how to treat ladies or pay them right. He especially doesn't want new girls to know anything that's why there's hardly any talking going on between girls on the couches. Just about every guy that clocked me in would talk bad about Fred. One customer told me how it was a big mistake giving Fred his business card, he told me that Fred won't stop calling him and how annoying he is. Alex is one of the security guys, and he's a good guy who does his job. He's probably the only one that gets payed well by Fred. Fred curses at the girls, he even once said on the phone to me ," I don't give a f*ck about the girls that work in my club." He even told me that he has 500 girls he can call to replace me, yah 500 girls that once worked for you at some point and haven't returned, and if you do call them I'm sure they'll hang up on you. It came out during an argument on the phone w/ him. He's a terrible owner and a disrespectful man who I never want to see again for as long as I live. The stuff in my locker, if your reading this Fred (the truth about you and how you treat ladies)just toss it Fred because I never want to step foot on your property again. And for the girls looking for work, there are soooo many other good clubs which you will be treated with respect and receive good paychecks. At any cause don't waste your time in this one or let Fred make any off of you being clocked in. TO FRED:One more thing I know about that one girl who's your rat I won't mention any names or numbers you know who & I knew all along. I'm not stupid you think that all girls are dumb and alot of them are way smarter than you.

Date: 3/25/2003 10:34am Name:   Delta (279) Subject: Last Comment Hurricane, there is no need to apologize if you are being truthful about Fred's bad behavior. My experience with Fred is that he violates the Labor Code routinely. He refuses to pay girls for amounts they have earned. He delays payment to coerce additional services. Fred survives only becase he owns the building in which he operates. Girls and other staff work there as a last resort. For those reasons, Fred suffers the highest turnover downtown of both employees and customers. I suppose the marketplace eventually punishes such behavior.

Date: 7/26/2002 11:05am Name:   Delta Subject: Tropical serves a purpose Maybe so, but the way he treats Sleepy is insulting. Sleepy works 12 hour shifts, often being the waitress too. Fred hired Sleepy for Sleepy's ability to bring in me and other good cusotmers (probably like you), but Fred's behavior has prevented Sleepy from being able to do so. I tried to keep going there, but eventually Fred banned me from the club after I represented several of the girls in a labor action to force Fred to pay salaries on time. Fred usually tells girls their checks are being held because the girl was late or needs to work another week to assure Fred she is going to stay, etc. The girls eventually leave being owed several weeks of pay that they never receive.

Fred spends money on advertising, gets some pretty attractive girls, but treats them so badly that they leave after 2-3 days tops. But in the mean time, they have learned about LAG and CF, and they move on to one of them. Without Fred, these women may not have gotten into the sytem. The place is attractive, and I think some girls that would get turned off by their first impressions of LAG or CF might think it would not be so bad, and get into it. But Fred is an idiot, treats Sleepy like shit, it a lousy host and talks trash to the girls in front of the customers. All-in-all a waste of time except that it is free to get in and if you catch a girl on her first night before Fred has had a chance to piss her off, there is some fun to be had.

Remember, the main thing that motivates them is . Secondly, forget about Tropical Club. There is almost no opportunity for action there. Odd feel to the room; women sitting on one side looking bored, and men, mainly Mexican, sitting opposite, looking at the women. Anyway, I engaged one, and we went to sit in the TV area. Pleasant conversation, though no mileage. Slightly plump, but voluptuous girl in early 20s, who's led a rough life. So, on to the next. A very young hispanic girl was the stuff fantasies are made of. Unfortunately, that's what it will be. No action, just a little dancing and sitting to talk. I think my age (46) must have brought out the shy youngster in her. Too bad. All in all, I'm not sure whether I'll be trying hostess clubs again. Maybe. But it isn't clear enough to me how to either get the mileage, or make a contact to see one on the outside. Maybe it just will take the right chemistry on a future visit.

Back when I was checking out Tropical for a review I notice the use of initials instaed of clock numbers. Fred/Frank or whoever he is would get all serious an take about 5 minutes before deciding what number or initial to assign to a girl. At all the other clubs they just recycle previously used clock numbers.

The girls complain regularly to me about him. The Club also adds a large charge to credit-card tips. Reminds me of the gouging at Club Starlight. I won't go back to either for a while.
