Dancer Reviews
Dmitri's Interview with Z Bone
Z:
Where are you originally from?
D:
Originally I'm from LA but I went to high school and spent some years afterwards in the Pacific North West.

Z:
Dmitri Do you remember the very first time you danced?
D:
The first dancing gig I had was in a peepshow. Which wasn't really dancing. You don't need much coordination to masturbate. Which is essentially what a peepshow is for.

Z:
How about the first time you danced on stage?
D:
The first time I danced on stage though was in a waitress contest at a strip club in Seattle. I had decided to waitress at a club to get the feel for it when I was disillusioned with my peepshow work. The night that I started there was a waitress dance contest that all of the waitresses joined, so I did it too. I danced to White Wedding by Billy Idol and just tried not to look at the crowd. [Laughs] I was pretty nervous but played it cool. And I tied for first place with another girl. We each won 50 bucks and I started dancing at that club the next night. But I only stayed there a week before I went back to the peepshow.

Z:
So when did you finally start dancing on stage on a regular basis?
D:
I started dancing onstage on regular basis when I moved to Southern California. I tried to work at Venus Faire but I guess they weren't hiring. So I ended up at the PlayPen, which at that time was the closest to where I was living, in the San Gabriel Valley. I stayed there a month and then went to the Lacy Street Cabaret which is where I really learned how to dance on stage.

Z:
As far as dancing goes, what kind of music do you dance to?
D:
Right now in my dancing CD case I have the following CDs: Air, Lords of Acid, The Last Days of Disco Soundtrack, Incubus, New Order, Faithless, Tool, David Bowie, Club Mix 2000, Moby, and The Breeders.

Z:
What kind of music do you listen to at home?
D:
I listen to everything I dance to so the only stuff that I only listen to at home is what I don't think would be good to dance to. Like The Pixies, Cesaria Evora, Pizzicato 5, Talking Heads, The Clash, Tom Waits, and many others. I have a very large range that I like.

Z:
I'm not familiar with The Pixies, Cesaria Evora, and Pizzicato 5. Could you tell me more about them?
D:
The Pixies are a band out of Boston that were popular in the late 80's, although never quite mainstream. Their most mainstream songs were "Here Comes Your Man", "Wave of Mutilation" and "Where's My Mind" which got big from it's usage in the Fight Club soundtrack. They are kind of surf-punk-alternative rock and their front man was Frank Black. I started listening to Cesaria Evora most recently. So I don't really know much about her but it's really really really good cuban music. And the Pizzicato 5 are a band I think from Japan with a small cult-like following in the US. They are kind of easy-listening, mod, jazzy music. Hard to explain and their lyrics go back and forth from English and Japanese.

Z:
Sounds interesting. I'll have to look into that when I get a chance. How about any pet peeves?
D:
Dmitri Hmmm. My biggest pet peeve is probably irresponsible people. Kind of ironic I think, given my job. I have major problems with people not willing to take responsibility for anything or willing to do things to improve bad situations they are in. I guess you have to make sure you are not sympathetic to these kinds of things in my line of work. Otherwise you could get walked on very easily. Which is why I stay out of the dressing room anywhere I work.

Z:
I know exactly what you are talking about. I call them professional victims. What do you like to do in your spare time?
D:
I don't have too much spare time. But most of the spare time I do have I spend distracted by ZChat. However, I do have a small darkroom in my apartment that gets put to use once every great while. I'm a little behind right now though. I like to read a lot, watch a lot of movies, play pool, although I'm terrible with a pool stick, and I try to get out at least once a week to do something fun.

Z:
Tell me more about your photography. What kind of pictures do you take?
D:
I take pictures of people mostly. I like candid shots.

Z:
Have you travelled?
D:
I travelled all over Midwestern U.S. as child with my parents but I don't remember much of it. My father was a hiking buff so we spent a lot of summers camping in Yellowstone National Park. I went to high school in Bellingham, Washington. It's a cute hippie college town about 30 minutes south of the Canadian border. And I spent a few years in Seattle. I have been all over Washington State and parts of Oregon due to a love for mini-road trips. I also have been to Georgia and Alabama to visit my grandparents when I was younger. Up to Alaska on a vacation with my parents and to Hawaii last spring. And of course Canada.

Z:
Where would you like to go?
D:
I would really like to go to Japan, Turkey, the Middle East, Spain, Russia, and Africa. Someday....[Sighs] But for now I'll have to try Mexico.

Z:
Interesting choices there. What type of guys are you attracted to?
D:
The most attractive thing in a person to me is their individual style. Whether it be the way they look or the way they do things. And intelligence. A sarcastic sense of humor helps too.

Z:
Do you have any favorite movies? Have you seen any lately?
D:
My favorite movies are Buffalo 66, Pretty In Pink, Eyes Wide Shut, and anything by John Waters.

Z:
What about TV?
D:
I don't watch much TV but I really like the news and news magazines. Also I love the Learning Channel, Nick at Nite, E! True Hollywood Story and anything trashy. [Laughs]

Z:
Well, thanks for the great interview.
D:
Welcome.
