Update: 10/2011: This club has been bought yet again
by new owners. This time, the owners from the Library (Lake Forest) has
taken over. New review coming soon.
As of 2003, Deja Vu has now partnered with Hustler and have converted this club to a
"Hustler Club." Their new cover charge is $7, table dances are $10,
and VIP dances are $20. The review below is from 1997 before this
club was owned by Deja Vu.
As of February 8, 2000, this club is owned and operated by the Deja Vu
chain of clubs.
As of March 1999, Scamps is topless with full bar. With all the protesters
at their opening, it's amazing and quite a coup to be able to serve
alcohol. Please keep in mind that the following review was written when
the club was nude in 1997.
Porno star Jenna Jameson's uncle (Larry) owns this club and she
promotes and features here. This location used to be a dance club (still
with disco ball) so the parking lot is gigantic for strip club standards.
When they have an overflow, the unpaved backlot is opened up for even more
space.
The day Jenna featured, there were 28 protesters outside the club. They
seemed to be related and decided to bring their small children to picket
the club. I wanted to interview one of the "leaders" but he declined
comment.
As you near the entrance, there is a box office to pay the $5 cover
before 7pm and $10 after. The cover goes up to $15 on the nights with
features. To the right of the boxoffice is a patio area for smokers. This
is one of the few nude clubs that adheres to the no smoking law of
California.
Upon entering, there is a large bar with 40 stools covered with a tiger
pattern. There seems to be some sort of jungle or hunting motif for the
club with stuffed animal heads on the walls. Don't worry, for those animal
lovers, they are all fake. There is a area to the right for features to do
polaroids and signing. A waitress actually seats you at your table and
takes the order for the minimum one $4.25 drink. For the time being, there
is no "Buy the lady a drink?" questions from the waitress.
Beyond the bar is the bathroom, which is large by strip club standards
with 4 stalls and 3 urinals. The feature size stage with runway is to the
left in the main room. This stage seats 32 with 2 poles with the DJ booth
to the left. The stage lighting is not spectacular for such a large club
but looks good and bright enough for even the hardcore nude club goer.
Each dancer's set consist of 2 songs with a break song after each
song. During this break song, the dancer goes around the entire stage to
collect all the tips. I've never seen this setup at any club in LA/OC.
This seems to be a lot of dead time for the lap dancers but I didn't hear
any complaints from them.
Because of the city constantly trying to close down this club, there is
a very strange law in Westminster that is in effect at Scamps. There are
tip "trays" near the stage where the customer must put the tip. The trays
are right next to the stage, yet you cannot put your tip on the stage.
Moreover, I could not figure out who is picks up the tips. It did not seem
like the dancer on stage picks up her own tips, although perhaps her
friend was picking it up for her. Needless to say, this puts a big damper
on tipping and therefore, there are far fewer dancers working here. Which
is exactly what the city wants.
As you are looking at the stage, behind the seating area is a raised
VIP area for lap dances. There are bench style couches and booths in this
area. Currently, the laps are only $10 and the dancer keeps all. As in the
other good lap clubs, the dancers are allowed to stand on the couch. The
bouncer normally stays near the bar side and looks into the mirror to see
what is going on. Use the bench couch on the far right side against the
wall near the exit for slightly higher mileage. If you get too touchy
feeley, the dancer will signal the bouncer to come over and scold you.
There are video cameras in the main room but they are probably not for
keeping track of the laps as much as just trouble on the floor.
The stage fee is $10 during the week and $25 on weekends and there are
lockers in the dressing room. This pricing is very competitive and will
attract a lot of dancers. The lap price is definitely geared to compete
directly with TJ's. However,
the nasty factor is much lower than TJ's and by today's LA/OC nude
standards, very low. Nonetheless, if you pick very carefully, you might be
able to find some higher mileage dancers from TJ's there. I predict that
as with most new clubs, the mileage will slowly get higher as the
management relaxes.
A dancer named Pandora was one of the more high pressure sales pitches.
She and another dancer named Cory had the right look. Don't miss
Rayne (dancer of the
month) who now also works here. Also don't forget to checkout
L?a (DOM for October 1998).
Update October 1, 1999:
There are no longer "tip trays". Patrons can place there tips directly on
stage if they want to. Stage fee now varies according to the time of
arrival. No stage fee from Mon - Sat before 6:30pm and Sundays, $10 from
6:30 to 8pm, and $20 from 8 to 9pm.
Unfortunately, Pandora, Rayne and Lena no longer work there.
Update 6/2008:
The lap dances are $20.
